GLOSSARY / WATCH TECHNOLOGY

Quartz vs. Automatic Movement

In brief

The movement is the engine of a watch. A quartz movement is powered by a battery and regulated by an oscillating quartz crystal; an automatic movement is mechanical and winds its mainspring via a rotor that moves as the watch is worn. The choice of movement shapes the price point, accuracy, maintenance and target group of a watch line.

How the two movement types work

Quartz movement: A battery makes a small quartz crystal oscillate. Its highly stable frequency is converted electronically into one-second pulses that drive the hands via a stepper motor.

Automatic movement: A wound mainspring drives a mechanical gear train, kept in rhythm by the balance wheel and escapement. A rotor uses the wearer's arm movements to rewind the mainspring.

Quartz and automatic compared

Quartz movement Automatic movement
Power source Battery Mainspring, wound by motion
Accuracy Very high Lower, depending on movement and regulation
Maintenance Battery replacement Servicing at longer intervals
Typical price point Entry level to mid-range Mid-range to upscale
Selling point Precise, low-maintenance, slim Craftsmanship, visible mechanics
Project considerations Observe battery regulations and labeling Power reserve, exhibition caseback, taller cases

Other movement types

  • Manual winding: mechanical like an automatic, but without a rotor; the mainspring is wound via the crown.
  • Solar movement: a quartz movement whose rechargeable cell is charged by light falling on the dial.
  • Complications: date, chronograph or multifunction displays increase case height, price and dial complexity.

What matters when choosing

The deciding factors are target group, price point and sales channel. For gift and fashion watches in retail, a reliable quartz movement is usually the obvious choice. An automatic watch appeals to customers who appreciate mechanics and requires more explanation at the point of sale. The movement also determines case height, dial layout and the position of the date and crown, so it should be defined early on.

How we handle this at Aviano

Aviano produces watch lines with all the movement types described here: quartz, automatic, manual winding and solar. We define the desired functions and component requirements before production and check them for feasibility. We determine which movement type suits your watch line based on your brief, covering target group, sales channels, target price point and planned quantities. We coordinate the components through our manufacturing network in Europe and Asia.

Frequently asked questions

Is a quartz movement inferior to an automatic movement?

No. Quartz movements are more accurate and require less maintenance. Automatic movements are valued above all for their mechanics and craftsmanship.

How long does the battery in a quartz movement last?

That depends on the movement, its functions and the battery. This information should be documented for each model in the project and stated in the instruction manual.

Can both movement types be combined in one collection?

Yes, for example with a quartz line as the entry level and selected automatic models at the top of the range. Cases and dials then need to be adapted to each movement.
