GLOSSARY / WATCH TECHNOLOGY

Water Resistance of Watches

In brief

Water resistance indicates the test pressure a watch case can withstand without water getting in. It is stated in bar or ATM and tested according to standards such as DIN 8310 or ISO 22810. The figure describes a test pressure, not a permissible diving depth.

What the ratings mean

One bar corresponds roughly to the pressure of a ten-meter column of water. Because swimming, diving in or showering add extra forces and temperature changes, the rating should be understood as a test pressure, not as the depth to which the watch can be worn (WatchTime).

Rating Common everyday interpretation
Water-resistant without pressure rating / 3 bar Splashes, rain, hand washing
5 bar Showering possible, no swimming
10 bar Swimming
20 bar and above Water sports; dive watches are tested according to their own standard

This classification follows common overviews, such as Wikipedia: Wasserdichtigkeit (German). For your product communication, you should use one consistent table and word it identically in the instruction manual, online store and packaging.

What affects water resistance

  • Caseback: A screw-down caseback usually seals better than a snap-on caseback.
  • Crown and pushers: These are the most common weak points, especially on chronographs.
  • Gaskets: They age and should be checked at every battery replacement.
  • Watch crystal: How the crystal is seated and glued or press-fitted in the case.
  • Strap: Leather does not tolerate water well, even if the case is sealed.

Common mistakes in projects

  • Raising expectations too high. “30 m” on the caseback is often misunderstood as suitability for diving.
  • Combining leather with high bar ratings. The strap then limits the use, not the case.
  • Stating a rating without testing. Water resistance should be tested on samples and through spot checks during series production.

How we handle this at Aviano

Aviano produces watches in all common water resistance levels, from 3 bar to 20 bar and above. Dive watches are subject to their own standard requirements, which we review separately in the project. We define the desired water resistance before production and check it for feasibility. It also determines the case construction, caseback, crown and choice of strap. Approval is based on physical samples, and we coordinate the information on the caseback, instruction manual and packaging with you.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 bar suitable for swimming?

No. In everyday terms, 3 bar or “water-resistant” without a pressure rating stands for splashes and rain, not for swimming.

Does a watch stay water-resistant permanently?

Not automatically. Gaskets age, and after a battery replacement the case must be closed correctly again.

What does ATM mean?

ATM stands for atmospheres and is used practically synonymously with bar.
