GLOSSARY / WATCH TECHNOLOGY

Watch Crystal: Mineral Glass and Sapphire Crystal

In brief

The watch crystal protects the dial and hands. Common types are mineral glass, hardened mineral glass, sapphire crystal and acrylic crystal. They differ mainly in scratch resistance, breakage behavior, appearance and price, and thus shape the perceived value of a watch.

Crystal types compared

Crystal Properties Typical use
Acrylic crystal Lightweight, shatterproof, but scratches easily; scratches can be polished out Children's watches, vintage look
Mineral glass More scratch-resistant than acrylic, inexpensive, can break under heavy impact Fashion and gift watches
Hardened mineral glass More resistant than standard mineral glass due to hardening Entry level to mid-range price point
Sapphire crystal Synthetic sapphire, highly scratch-resistant, higher price Mid-range and upscale price points

Appearance and design

  • Anti-reflective coating: An anti-reflective coating improves legibility, especially on sapphire crystal.
  • Shape: Flat, slightly domed or strongly domed; the curvature changes reflections and overall height.
  • Magnifier: A date magnifier (cyclops lens) is a well-known design element, but it changes the character of the watch.

The right choice for your collection

The crystal should match the price point and the brand promise. Advertising “sapphire crystal” makes a clear quality statement, but the cost has to be supported by your pricing. For inexpensive gift watches, hardened mineral glass is often the sensible compromise. It is important that the crystal information in product copy is accurate; “scratch-resistant” or “sapphire-coated” are not equivalent to solid sapphire crystal.

How we handle this at Aviano

Aviano works with all four crystal types: acrylic crystal, mineral glass, hardened mineral glass and sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on request. We match the case, crystal and other components to the target group, positioning and target price point of your watch line. The specific design is checked on physical samples and locked in for series production.

Frequently asked questions

Is sapphire crystal unbreakable?

No. Sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant, but it can break if the edge takes a hard knock.

Is sapphire crystal worth it for inexpensive watches?

Rarely. At lower price points, hardened mineral glass usually offers the better balance of cost and durability.

How can you identify sapphire crystal?

Reliably only through the supplier's specification. That is why the crystal type belongs in the product specification and the sample approval.
