The components
- Middle case: the actual case body with the lugs for attaching the strap.
- Bezel: the ring around the crystal, fixed or rotating, often a defining design element.
- Caseback: snap-on caseback, screw-down caseback or exhibition caseback; the surface for engraving and mandatory information.
- Crown and pushers: for setting the watch and operating additional functions.
Case materials
| Material | Properties |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel | Robust, corrosion-resistant, easy to polish and brush; the standard across many price points |
| Titanium | Lightweight and robust, more complex to machine |
| Brass or alloy, coated | Inexpensive to manufacture; durability depends on the coating |
| Ceramic, aluminum | Distinctive look and feel, for selected models |
Colored stainless steel cases in gold, rose gold or black are often created by PVD coating.
Size and proportions
The diameter is stated in millimeters excluding the crown, along with the case height and lug width. Small deviations noticeably change how the watch looks on the wrist. Size and height also depend on the movement and should therefore be defined together with it.
Existing case or custom shape?
An existing case combined with your own dial is faster and less expensive to implement. A custom case shape makes the watch unmistakable, but requires tooling, more sampling rounds and higher minimum order quantities.
How we handle this at Aviano
Shape, size and material define the character of the watch and must match the desired positioning. That is why we consider the case, dial, strap and technical specifications together and agree on concrete feasibility based on your brief. Suitable existing models can be produced with your logo; alternatively, we develop a new collection.
Frequently asked questions
What diameter is common?
That depends on the target group and style. We determine the right diameter together with you based on samples, not just on numbers.
Can the caseback be engraved?
Yes. The caseback is suitable for the logo, model details, water resistance and material information.
What is an exhibition caseback?
A caseback with a glass insert through which the movement is visible. It is used mainly on mechanical watches.
