Laser Engraving and Personalization

In brief

In laser engraving, a laser beam removes material from the surface or selectively changes its color. This creates logos, names, dates or patterns on jewelry and watches, precisely and without tooling costs. As a result, the process is suitable both for brand marks across a series and for personalizing individual pieces.

What laser engraving is used for

  • Brand marks and logos on pendants, tags, clasps or casebacks
  • Personalization with names, initials, dates or coordinates
  • Mandatory and origin markings such as fineness, item number or maker's mark
  • Decorative finishes, such as patterns or hatching that would otherwise be complex to produce

Which materials are suitable

Stainless steel, 925 sterling silver, brass and titanium all engrave well. With coated pieces, the sequence matters: if engraving is done after gold plating, the laser exposes the base material, which may be intended as a deliberate contrast. If the engraving should match the color of the surface, it is done before the finishing.

What matters in the design

  • Minimum sizes. Very fine lines and small lettering lose legibility on curved or narrow surfaces. A test piece shows what is realistic.
  • Vector files. Logos should be supplied as vector files so that edges stay crisp.
  • Position. Curved surfaces, edges and hollow parts limit the engraving area.
  • Depth and contrast. Whether the engraving appears deep, shallow or in color depends on the material and type of laser.

Series logo or individual personalization

A uniform logo is engraved on the entire series during production and costs hardly more than a piece without engraving. This makes laser engraving a common method for merchandise jewelry featuring a company, club or event logo. Individual names or dates on each piece, by contrast, require a separate data handover, verification and assignment of every single item. This is more involved and is usually priced per piece, for example for corporate gifts with employee names.

How we handle this at Aviano

Whether a logo is engraved, stamped, cast or printed is something we decide together based on design, material and quantity. The position, size and finish of the engraving are approved on the sample before series production starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is engraving worthwhile for small quantities?

Yes. Because no tooling is required, laser engraving is a cost-effective way to apply a logo, especially for smaller runs.

Is an engraving permanent?

On stainless steel, silver and titanium, engraving is highly durable. On coated surfaces, its durability also depends on the coating around the engraving.
