Electroplating and Gold Plating

In brief

Electroplating applies a thin layer of metal, such as gold, rose gold or rhodium, to a conductive base material in an electrolytic bath. Gold plating defines the color and perceived value of a piece of jewelry; durability and price depend mainly on the layer thickness and the pretreatment.

How the process works

The piece of jewelry is cleaned, pretreated and suspended in a bath of dissolved metal salts. When an electric current is applied, the metal ions are deposited evenly on the surface. The duration and the current determine how thick the layer becomes. Several layers are often applied in sequence, for example an intermediate layer for adhesion and the visible color layer.

Suitable base materials

  • Brass. The classic base for gold-plated fashion jewelry.
  • 925 silver. Gold-plated silver combines a precious metal with a gold color.
  • Stainless steel. Can be electroplated, but for gold tones it is often finished with PVD instead.

Layer thickness is decisive

Layer thickness is specified in micrometers (µm). When new, very thin gold plating looks the same as thicker plating, but it wears off faster, especially on rings, bracelets and clasps. For your assortment, you should therefore define which layer thickness suits the price point and intended use, and record it in the order and in the golden sample.

Electroplating or PVD?

Electroplating PVD coating
Process Electrolytic bath Coating in a vacuum
Typical base Brass, silver Stainless steel, titanium
Colors Gold, rose gold, rhodium, other precious metals Gold, rose gold, black, gunmetal and more
Abrasion resistance Depends on layer thickness Considered particularly abrasion-resistant

How we handle this at Aviano

We match material and finish to the design, the intended use and your target price point. Which finish is right is decided based on the specific model. Color and finish are checked in the sample and locked in for the series with the golden sample.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two gold tones look different?

Gold colors vary depending on the alloy of the bath and the intermediate layer. That is why the shade should be approved on the sample, not based on a description.

Can gold plating be renewed?

In principle, yes, but for series production it is rarely worthwhile. It is more important to choose a layer suited to the intended use from the start.

What does rhodium-plated mean?

Rhodium plating is an electroplated coating with rhodium. It gives silver a bright, cool shine and protects it from tarnishing.
