| 333 | Gold with 33.3% fine gold (8 karat) |
| 585 | Gold with 58.5% fine gold (14 karat) |

Mandatory or voluntary?
In Germany, stamping the fineness is voluntary. However, anyone who states a fineness must ensure that the information is accurate. Other countries are stricter: in the United Kingdom, for example, precious metal jewelry above certain weights must be hallmarked by an official assay office. For exports, it is therefore worth checking the rules of the destination country.
Maker's marks and other marks
In addition to the fineness, many pieces of jewelry bear a maker's mark or brand mark. It makes clear who stands behind the stated fineness and, for own brands, strengthens recognition. In countries that have joined the Vienna Convention on hallmarking (Hallmarking Convention), there is also a Common Control Mark (CCM).
What applies to coated jewelry
- Gold-plated silver is stamped with the fineness of the base material, i.e. 925.
- Gold-plated brass or stainless steel does not receive a gold fineness stamp. Terms such as “gold-plated” describe the surface, not the material.
- Very small parts such as thin chains or stud earrings often have no room for a stamp. In that case, the stamp is often placed on the clasp or on a small tag.
Stamping or laser marking?
Traditionally, the hallmark is struck with a steel punch. For delicate or hollow parts, laser engraving is gentler because the material is not deformed.
How we handle this at Aviano
For precious metal collections, we agree with you whether and where the fineness and brand mark are applied. In doing so, we take into account the design, the size of the parts and the countries in which the collection is to be sold.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own logo as a hallmark?
Yes. A dedicated brand mark alongside the fineness is common for own brands and can be applied as a stamp or by laser engraving.
Is jewelry without a stamp of inferior quality?
Not necessarily. Very small or delicate parts in particular are often made without a stamp. In that case, the fineness should be stated in the product information and shipping documents.
