GLOSSARY / MATERIALS

Sterling Silver (925 Silver)

In brief

Sterling silver, also called 925 silver, is an alloy of 92.5 percent fine silver and 7.5 percent other metals, usually copper. The number 925 indicates the fineness in parts per thousand. Pure silver would be too soft for jewelry; the alloy makes it dimensionally stable and easy to work with.

Properties

  • Precious metal. Silver is part of the product promise and justifies a higher price point than fashion jewelry.
  • Easy to work with. Suitable for casting, chains, delicate shapes and stone settings.
  • Tarnishes. Silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and darkens over time.

Finishing silver jewelry

Finish Effect
Polished Classic, bright silver shine
Rhodium-plated Cool, white shine and protection against tarnishing
Gold-plated Gold look on a precious metal base, see Electroplating and gold plating
Oxidized Deliberately darkened recesses for a vintage look

Hallmarking

Silver jewelry usually carries a “925” fineness stamp. How and where it is stamped, for example on the back of a pendant or on a small tag at the clasp, should be considered in the design so that it does not detract from the look.

Costing: the silver price plays a role

The material share of silver jewelry depends on the silver price, which can fluctuate significantly. For heavy pieces or long contract terms, it can make sense to state in the quotation which silver price the costing is based on and how significant price changes will be handled.

Frequently asked questions

Is 925 silver the same as sterling silver?

Yes. Both terms refer to an alloy containing 92.5 percent fine silver.

How can tarnishing be prevented?

Rhodium plating protects the surface. Airtight packaging and storage away from moisture also help.

Is silver suitable for promotional goods?

For promotional goods at low price points, stainless steel or brass are usually easier to cost. Silver is a better fit for collections that aim for a higher perceived value.
