GLOSSARY / PRODUCT SAFETY

GPSR for Jewelry

In brief

The GPSR is the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988, which has applied since December 13, 2024. It requires that only safe consumer products are placed on the market and governs, among other things, risk analysis, technical documentation, labeling and mandatory information in online retail. Jewelry is covered as a consumer product.

Who the GPSR applies to

The regulation applies to consumer products that are placed or made available on the market in the EU, insofar as no more specific safety rules apply, and also to online offers to consumers in the EU (IHK Hannover). Manufacturers, importers, distributors and online marketplace operators each have obligations of varying scope.

The manufacturer’s key obligations

Obligation What it involves
Internal risk analysis Assess the product’s potential risks and document the result
Technical documentation Prepare before placing the product on the market, keep up to date and retain for at least ten years (IHK Hannover)
Product identification Type, batch or serial number, or another element that makes the product identifiable
Manufacturer details Name, registered trade name or trademark, and postal and electronic address; for small products such as jewelry, on the packaging or an accompanying document
Safety information Instructions for use and safety information in clear language, where required for safe use

Mandatory information in online retail

Online listings must include, among other things, manufacturer details, the responsible person in the EU for manufacturers based outside the EU, product images and product identifiers, as well as any required warnings and safety information. This information must appear in the listing itself; a link is not sufficient (IHK Hannover).

What this means for retailers and own brands

  • Clarify the manufacturer role. If you sell jewelry under your own brand, you should determine who the legal manufacturer is.
  • Provide the data. Manufacturer details, product identifiers and safety information must be available for online shops and marketplaces.
  • Plan for packaging. Mandatory information needs space on the card, jewelry box or label and belongs in the brief.

How we handle this at Aviano

For custom collections, Aviano is the legal manufacturer and assumes responsibility for product safety and compliance. Approvals for packaging and labels are fixed steps in every project, so that mandatory information is taken into account from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GPSR also apply to jewelry from Asia?

Yes. What matters is that the product is offered in the EU. If the manufacturer is not established in the EU, there must be a responsible person in the EU, such as the importer.

Does the information have to appear on every piece of jewelry?

Not necessarily. For small products, the information can be placed on the packaging or an accompanying document.

What about watches?

Watches are consumer products as well. Depending on their features, additional requirements apply, for example for batteries.
